Not to us, not to most people. Environments like this - once the basic set in the hierarchy of needs is met - usually kick us into creative ways to vent our experiences.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Yell at the world, if you will.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">So when self-quarantine and masks and economic problems and injustice and riots and Murder Wasps came, the brothers let it out in new ways, and a new set of tracks was pushed out: A fleshed out and conceptual whole. Backbeat-heavy, sometimes danceable, hopeful chord progressions laced with a bit of the craziness that is this time we live in.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This is the downcast album we thought - we hoped - the brothers would never produce. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">But we're nothing if we don't have a smile on, so it's got one. Maybe not that genuine, but it's there. It's <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Happy To Be Here:
A counter-intuitive move, you'd think, but it worked out in this case.

But let's be honest - It's all about Spotify. But first, a bit of back story.

The producer has never been happy with the way "A Work In Progress" was received. In a non-helpful, nostalgic fashion, he considers it their best work (this was before the fiasco that preceded the blank years before "Limbo").

Time goes by, and the rosy glasses grow foggier, and the past looks better than ever. He looks lovingly on those "A Work In Progress" cuts, and realizes that they have never been Spotified. He sees an opportunity to scratch his itch and fill in the Spotify catalogue at the same time. And thus is born the "Hop Skip Jump" EP.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">You can presave it here. And for maximum nostalgia, hit up the music vid (which, we admit, is showing it's age):
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Like most things in "the home", the title given to these appointments is misleading. Nothing is actually cleaned, and no one likes them. Least of all Horace, who finds them degrading.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">However, due to the stress they invoke, the resulting clarity does sometimes reveal surprising details about what they find important (in a hierarchy of needs sort of way).
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Isaac and Horace place c<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">ats at the top of their needs list.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This one is more "accessible" (which is another word for "what we're used to"), and the comments have been pretty good, for a Brothers Burn release:
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">"...Nicked Fedora [is] an instrumental track with dexterous use of vox samples making this the tap-along, foot stomp <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">track of the album."<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">"It's a banger <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">[What Jessica Said]."
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">"...the originality can’t be questioned, and it’s a pleasure to hear something so creatively unique right now."
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The good folks at Stero Stickman had much more to say: Check out their review here.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Here's a tracklist, FWIW -
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">1 · What Jessica Said
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">2 · Escape
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">3 · Nicked Fedora
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">4 · Fill in the Blanks
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">5 · Buddha Be-Bop
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">6 · The Road Not Travelled
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;">7 · Gotta Run<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">If you want, you can pre-save it to Spotify by clicking this here.Scott Osbornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01183180266303546447noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4908938966053951512.post-65898656951260682462019-02-11T03:11:00.001-08:002019-02-11T03:11:24.903-08:00Filling in the ___<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Most every day - when the orderlies allow - Isaac and Horace twiddle on their software instruments. There are a ton of these doodles, some OK, some just puzzling.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">And after a year - WTF was released March '18 - the producer decided it was Time. He sifted through all those doodles, and lo and behold, there were some good ones in that pile.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">He earmarked these and "suggested" (his bitter tone difficult to convey here) that they "finish what they started" with these particular ones.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The result - still being worked on - is "Fill In The Blanks", which is hoped to hit availability 3/15/19. Yes, that's a Friday.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Album artwork? Subject to change of course, but here's the current favorite -
S<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">uch is the case with unlikely-named Casimir Engine, the prestigious, gentlemanly host of the world-famous <a href="https://www.casimirengine.com/" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Casimir Engine Podcast<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">.

We met Mr. Engine via that newfangled Twitter thing that people are so nuts about. He was good enough to include not just one, but two of The Brothers Burn numbers on his show - "Nicked Fedora" (on 11/5/18) and "We Live On (In Desire)" (on 11/12/18).

And if that wasn't enough, he went further and spun "Nicked Fedora" on his inaugural Analogue Trash radio show (which, foreverafter, will be on Tuesday nights, 8-10 PM, Manchester UK time).
You should give Mr. Engine's podcast a listen or three. THEN go tune into that outstanding Analogue Trash show as well. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">He talked to the gullible folks at Burn Films, and managed to persuade them to pick a song or three and produce a video. He described the work to the production team as "something you are very lucky to have a part in" and that it was an excellent chance "to showcase your work".
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Though perhaps not the defining examples of music videography they could be, the brothers now have two new shiny videos to showcase their work to those wacky music fans who get their music from a video site (instead of off an AM radio station as God intended).
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">So, it is with great pride that we present the Official Music Video for On The Way Out (from WTF):
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Please give a warm round of applause for the Official Music Video for You Are Old (from WTF):
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Yes, available for the taking - Some of the tracks are on Soundcloud, but the whole confusing thing is on Bandcamp, free for the taking.
If it isn't here already.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Confused?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Yeah. <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The brothers get that.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Live that way, actually. Never really knowing when the ice cream will be disallowed in the cafeteria, or the lawyers will call with good news, or the orderlies will be nice, or surly, or nice and surly.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">And - getting philosophical on you - life, generally speaking, is confusing. WTF, ya know?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Which is why the latest Brothers Burn collection is called that. WTF.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">He laughed at the Republicans, then the Democrats. Cooed over a video of a cat lazing in a bucket of water. Then stopped. Clicked through on a story. Then another, and another, and... Horace made sighing noises, meant to draw Isaac back to the task at hand. It didn't work.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">He had found the story about Keith Lamont Scott, and the resulting furor in Charlotte, North Carolina (among other parts of the US).
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The "home" frowns upon social media - and news coverage in general - citing legendary incidents of cafeteria violence that no-one can recall, so the brothers were unfamiliar with the previous police shootings. The producer, ripping the laptop from Isaac's hands, summarized current public perceptions about police misconduct and "profiling".
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">There was a moment of stillness in the room. Then Horace asked "And people are OK with this?"
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">To which the producer, trying to quell the entire topic and get them back to work, replied "I'm a people, and as long as I've got peace, I don't give a s-. Stay off my bloody laptop. And get back to work. Please."
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The stillness took another moment. And then they went back to work.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The next day - to the producer's fury - a new track was in the session list. He bellowed at no one in particular, banging his laptop on the desk. But he eventually indulged his curosity - it was an unheard track, after all.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">And when the last waves ended - abruptly, as intended - his anger had vanished.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Later, when Isaac and Horace came in the studio, the track wasn't mentioned. Not then, and not ever - To this day, it has yet to be discussed.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">After the burst of energy bringing The Milkshake Boom-inspired "Encouragement Clown Outtakes" to the world, Isaac and Horace simply kept on working. Noodling, mostly. When they were around.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">But the producer, liking the business of producing stuff, dug through old audio sessions, looking for "likely candidates". Sessions from 2014, 2015, and the spring of this year. Lots of them, hundreds. Out of that pile, he found 20.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">And when the brothers were next in the studio, he loaded some of the files for their opinion. Some were scorned. But some were taken, munged, and mangled beyond recognizition. And with this approach, the producer ended up with the tracks of a new LP.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The title is a basterdization (or is it bastardization?) of the Ella Wheeler Wilcox poem "Art and Heart", insisted upon by the producer, who felt it was time to "take off the kid gloves" and <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">"lead more actively" - which means he is now a <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">domineering jerk. The reference will be explained in a later post - once the producer is in an emotional state that is conducive to anything other than bellowing and scowling.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">On a more positive note, we're ecstatic to report that the producer managed to convince the AWESOME Panic Surfer to contribute to one of the tracks ("Don't Hold Back"). We'll have more details on that collaboration later.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Release date is tentatively scheduled for 10/26/16, just in time for Halloween.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Candy? We'll see.

And, to our utter amazement, the good folks at The Milkshake Boom asked for some music cues for their latest production, "The Encouragement Clown" (still in the throes of post-production at the time of this post).

Though unaware that they did productions, the producer is quite familiar with The Milkshake Boom - it is one of the most popular movie-based podcasts around.

He quickly got the brothers working on the rough cut of the (hysterical) short, then got the lawyers working on contingencies. (Experience has taught us to prepare for clients becoming aware of the brothers' "troubles".)

In a rare burst of productivity - brought about by either the forced hiatus from the studio or the inspiring nature of the short - the brothers generated a slew of work, some of which could not be used for one reason or another. The producer, fearing that the uncharacteristic production boom might go unused, decided to release the cuts "to the wild", "just to show we're still viable" he said (in a very bitter tone that is difficult to convey here).

So it is with great pleasure that we announce that Friday, July 1, 2016, look for "Encouragement Clown Outtakes" on Soundcloud and Bandcamp.

3/24/14

That's a Monday, so... Well, don't set your alarm clock. We'll wait for you to get up.

And along with that hardened, post-SXSW date, comes the cover:

The track list is likeuntoso:

1. The Foremost Circle
2. Head Down
3. Wandering Through
4. (I'll Be Your) Happy Camper
5. Walk the Talk
6. Limbo
7. Catz
8. Canto 4
9. On Our Way (To Who Knows Where)

Lastly, we're extremely pleased to announce that the riveting voice of Cori Samuel is featured on two of those tracks ("The Foremost Circle" and "Canto 4"). Read more about Cori (or better yet, hire her voice) on her website.
Things have been... How to put it?

The producer wanted to report, in his most enthusiastic voice, that Isaac and Horace have been in the studio these last 19 months, meticulously crafting their next release. That this alleged work is the opus that they've held in check all these many years. That it is a masterpiece, a brilliant work that transcends all musical endeavors to date. That blah blah blah blah blah...

You get the drift.

Unfortunately, there are records of a public nature on file in the courthouse at 1000 Guadalupe in downtown Austin. These records can be easily discovered and consulted, and the information they contain blithely wipes away any glittering blather the producer produces.

So we'll make a clean breast of it and say, in our most diffidently vague manner, that the brothers have been "busy", but that time is past and they have returned to the studio to work on a new release.

In the process of compiling these new compositions, a common thread has been discovered, which gave stead to the name of this release: Limbo.

We can understand that association, but No, not that kind of limbo. This kind:

We suspect it's been inspired by the legal state they found themselves in, but instead we'll insist that it has always been a theme that the brothers have "identified with", and leave it at that.

This new eight (possibly nine) track release features more of the brother's signature danceable electro-pop, and dips a proverbial toe into dramatic orchestrated pieces (obviously emulating Hybrid and Juno Reactor). ETA is March or April 2014.

And we're actively discouraging a release date of April Fools' Day.

You read his latest, "Discount Miracles"? Good stuff, a nice blend of high brow sci fi and low brow motivations:

The crew of the space salvage ship JNE-0518 (the Jenny) have crashed on a planet that has lost its link to civilization. Surrounded by kingdoms stuck in the dark ages, the crew decides to hire themselves out as wizards, available to make any prophecy come true.

But the latest job goes bad when they find themselves transporting a deified prince. Can the team get away from two different nations before they are caught and burned as royal kidnappers and witches? Even if they can escape the two armies, can they escape the iron grip of prophecy itself?

It's good writing by an artful author, and we were honored that the man tapped the brothers once again for music duties for the Discount Miracles podcast. Cool.

The brothers banged heads on it for a while. And in the end, had managed to conjure up 8 different tracks of varying quality and appropriateness.

The tracks were presented to the author/podcaster. He mulled them over, then selected the last one, 8C. There was much rejoicing - We thought that was the strongest one, too.

And what about the previous 7 tracks? Some were trashed, never to be foisted on human ears again. The remaining were posted on the Downloads and Soundtracks page. You wanna hear them? Go here and hear!

But for a great read, you need to just go ahead and add Discount Miracles to your library:

Ladies and gentlemen, we proudly present Music from Calls for Cthulhu!
We had a blast putting this together, and we must thank (and blame) Brandg.

Yep, that's the brother's music you hear in there. Some of it derived from other, more noteworthy antecedents (Modest Mussorgsky, Sheila Cole). But most of it is their own.

Every now and again, some wandering soul would hit up the producer for one of the audio cues. Or present a query about the composition of a particular bit.

The producer kept notes of this. Eventually, he surmised a need to release the C4C efforts to the universe, and so tasked Isaac and Horace on the latest project - The compilation of bits and pieces that the brothers contributed to the Calls for Cthulhu series. MORE than just a compilation, truthfully (the actual words were "make it mo' betta").

So it's with great pride and pleasure that the producer announces the next project: Music from Calls for Cthulhu!

It should be finished 4/30/11. Look for it!

Composed, recorded, rendered, mixed, mastered, pimped. Finished. Whew. Here it is. Or the CD cover, anyway:

Sad though - Now the producer REALLY has to work. That's OK though, 'cause it's getting through. We found it on iTunes, Amazon. Spotify.

And Bandcamp:
And no rain since... Can't remember.

It does something to ya, all that heat. Dries up your pores, makes you thirsty. Gives you a new appreciation for rain - You ever have a time when you hated rain?

Isaac and Horace have not been unmoved. More like obsessed. The only thing taking more of their brain's cycles during this phase is Mother, who is never far from their thoughts, though she's been dead and buried for 17 years now.

So with the new obsession comes a new birth - "Turning Into Ash" is the name of the next release. Our first pass art, generated by the producer just so he could have a simplistic image to embed in the MP3s, was this:

Not all that inspiring. After some digging around, consulting, and asking the Internet, the producer came up, well, dry. He turned to Horace for ideas, who remembered that tale of fiery woe from long ago - Pompeii. From there, the producer produced this as the new CD's art:

If this image doesn't convey it, we'll just say it straight out: This is the brothers' darkest, most dramatic work ever.

It will hit 9/30/11. We want you to have it.
We don't know for sure - Change is one of the few constants the brothers experience - custody battles or privacy hearings or medical examinations or legal wranglings, change, or threat thereof, is their only constant.

But the producer noticed a big shift in the digital music landscape. Local band Quiet Company is now in cahoots with GrooveShark and Rocket Science - Their next release will be promoted via a new showcase project that will circumvent the big labels. It's a bold move by new movers and shakers in the new world music order - Read about it here.

The upshot was that the producer took a look at GrooveShark. Got addicted. Moved the brothers' music up, and now you can find "A Work In Progress" on yonder Grooveshark.

Cool. And not just because it's got "shark" in the title.
